In 1785 and 1786 Mozart wrote a series of masterpieces reinventing the nature of the piano concerto. In this period he began to re-examine the roles of the soloist and orchestra, thus developing aspects of communication and dialogue between the two entities in a way that had not been heard before. In 1786, Mozart’s head was full of opera — his work on Figaro led him to paint situation and emotion with new coloristic tools which would spill over into the piano concertos that followed.

Mozart Momentum — 1786 is the second chapter in pianist Leif Ove Andsnes’ exploration of two especially remarkable years in the history of classical music.
