Live bei ihren Premieren 2012 aufgenommen, sind Mason Bates‘ Alternative Energy und Anna Clynes Night Ferry auf dieser einzigartigen Veröffentlichung von CSO Resound vereint. Beide Werke wurden vom CSO in Auftrag gegeben und unter der Leitung von Riccardo Muti uraufgeführt.
Anna Clyne schreibt über ihr Werk, es sei ein „Klangporträt von Reisen; Reisen innerhalb der Natur und von physischen, mentalen und emotionalen Zuständen“. Es ist von Schubert inspiriert und nimmt Bezug auf die Stimmungsschwankungen in seinen Werken, die schnell zwischen emotionalen Extremen wechseln.
Bates nennt Alternative Energy eine „Energiesinfonie“, die eine eigene Reise unternimmt. „Beginnend auf einem rustikalen Schrottplatz im Mittleren Westen im späten 19. Jahrhundert“, schreibt er, „reist das Stück durch immer größere und mächtigere Energien – den heutigen Teilchenbeschleuniger, ein futuristisches chinesisches Kernkraftwerk – bis es einen zukünftigen isländischen Regenwald erreicht, wo die letzten Bewohner der Menschheit eine Rückkehr zu einer einfacheren Lebensweise anstreben.“
