Nach Frederick Stocks Aufnahmesessions im Dezember 1930 mit dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra für Victor stellte das Plattenlabel sein symphonisches Aufnahmeprogramm aufgrund der wirtschaftlichen Zwänge der Großen Depression im Wesentlichen ein. Im Laufe des nächsten Jahrzehnts tauchten Orchester langsam wieder auf Alben auf, und im November 1939 schlossen sich Stock und das CSO wieder ihrem ursprünglichen Label Columbia an, um eine neue Reihe von Aufnahmen zu produzieren.
