The sixth and final volume in Pristine Classical’s series devoted to Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra brings together recordings made for Victor at Orchestra Hall in December 1941, near the end of Stock’s extraordinary 37-year tenure as the Orchestra’s music director. The collection features music by Bach, Wagner, Dvořák, Richard Strauss and Ernest Chausson.

The program opens with Stock’s own richly orchestrated transcription of Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major, BWV 552 (St. Anne), followed by Forest Murmurs from Wagner’s Siegfried. Dvořák’s In Nature’s Realm Overture, Op. 91, represents one of only a handful of works by the composer that Stock recorded, and On the Shores of Sorrento from Richard Strauss’ Aus Italien, Op. 16, continues the CSO’s early recorded association with Strauss’ music.

The album concludes with Chausson’s Symphony in B-flat Major, Op. 20, one of only three recordings of the work made during the 78-rpm era. Stock makes the performance uniquely his own in the final movement, transferring a prominent chorale theme from solo trumpet to organ. Also notable is the Wagner selection, which was never commercially issued on 78 rpm and survives from a vinyl test pressing.

Restored and remastered by Mark Obert-Thorn, these recordings preserve some of the final orchestral sessions of Frederick Stock’s long association with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
