Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Aram Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto in D-flat Major, a brilliant and highly virtuosic work that combines sweeping Romantic gestures, vivid orchestral color and musical influences rooted in the composer’s Armenian heritage. Once championed by pianists including William Kapell and Oscar Levant, the concerto receives a dynamic performance from Thibaudet, whose long-standing advocacy has helped return the work to wider attention.

The album extends beyond the concerto with solo piano arrangements of some of Khachaturian’s best-known music, including the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from Spartacus, the Sabre Dance and Lullaby from Gayaneh and the complete Masquerade Suite. Thibaudet also performs selections from Pictures of Childhood, revealing a more intimate and lyrical side of the composer’s music.

Recorded in Los Angeles and released by Decca Classics, the collection offers a wide-ranging portrait of Khachaturian’s music, moving from the theatrical scale of the Piano Concerto to ballet favorites and characterful solo works.
