Diese Veröffentlichung auf CSO Resound, dem Hauslabel des Chicago Symphony Orchestra, enthält Werke von zwei modernen Meistern: Schönbergs Kol Nidre und Schostakowitschs Suite nach Versen von Michelangelo Buonarroti. Es ist die siebte CSO Resound-Aufnahme mit Riccardo Muti und enthält Live-Aufnahmen aus der Orchestra Hall von März und Juni 2012.
Kol Nidre zeigt Muti am Dirigentenpult des CSO und des Chicago Symphony Chorus, mit dem renommierten Interpreten jüdischer Musik Alberto Mizrahi als Erzähler. Der international gefeierte russische Bassist Ildar Abdrazakov ist der Solist in der Suite nach Versen von Michelangelo Buonarroti.
Arnold Schönberg komponierte sein Kol Nidre 1938 auf Wunsch von Rabbi Jacob Sonderling vom Fairfax Temple in Los Angeles. Das Kol Nidre ist ein Glaubensbekenntnis, das mit dem Vorabend von Jom Kippur – dem Versöhnungstag, dem heiligsten der jüdischen Feiertage – verbunden ist. Nur einen Monat nach der Reichspogromnacht in Nazi-Deutschland uraufgeführt, ist Kol Nidre ein liturgisches Werk, in dem ein Rabbiner einen ehrfürchtigen Dialog mit einem Chor führt.
Dmitri Schostakowitschs Suite nach Versen von Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1974 für Bass und Klavier komponiert, wurde später für volles Orchester instrumentiert. Schostakowitsch betrachtete die Suite in ihrer endgültigen Fassung als seine letzte Symphonie. Er starb am 9. August 1975, bevor die Orchesterfassung uraufgeführt werden konnte. Teilweise zum fünften hundertjährigen Jubiläum von Michelangelos Geburt geschrieben, enthält die Suite Vertonungen von 11 Gedichten des italienischen Künstlers und Schriftstellers zu Themen, die von Liebe und Kreativität bis zu Tod und Exil reichen. Schostakowitschs karge Vertonungen dieser Verse unterstreichen die Schwere der ernsteren Themen der Suite; diese Themen hatten persönliche Relevanz für den sterbenden Komponisten, der fast sein ganzes Leben unter sowjetischer Herrschaft gelebt hatte.
