Die Musik von Schostakowitsch bildet den Kern der Programmplanung von Klaus Mäkelä und den Osloer Philharmonikern, seit sie im November 2019 erstmals die Fünfte Symphonie aufführten. Die hier zusammengestellten drei Symphonien wurden in den 1930er Jahren komponiert und spiegeln eine für den Komponisten zutiefst traumatische Zeit wider.
Für Mäkelä ist die Vierte das ultimative Meisterwerk des Komponisten. „Die Gesten sind so unglaublich modern“, sagt der Dirigent, „es klingt, als wäre es erst gestern geschrieben worden. Es ist ein sehr problematisches Werk, nicht nur weil es viel, viel später uraufgeführt wurde, sondern es ist so ungewöhnlich, selbst für Schostakowitsch. In gewisser Weise enthält es alles – den Kern all seines Ausdrucks. Und es ist schockierend in Bezug auf seine Struktur und harmonische Sprache, die manchmal extrem brutal sein kann.“
Die Fünfte Symphonie ist, in den Worten des Dirigenten, „in Bezug auf Ausdruck und Struktur nahezu perfekt. Was sie so großartig macht, ist, dass sie so viele Ausdrucksebenen hat, die auf so unterschiedliche Weise interpretiert werden können.“
Die Sechste Symphonie, 1939 komponiert, nachdem die unmittelbare Lebensgefahr für Schostakowitsch nach Stalins Verdammung der Oper Lady Macbeth von Mzensk vorüber war, ist ein Werk, das Mäkelä besonders am Herzen liegt. „Die Sechste ist eine meiner Favoriten, weil sie ein so zutiefst persönliches Werk mit einer ungewöhnlich unvollkommenen Form ist. Dem intensiven ersten Satz Largo folgen zwei kurze Tänze grotesker Freude und Parodie, die dem Werk eine Tiefe verleihen, die sowohl intensiv dramatisch als auch intim ist.“
