Carlos Kalmar leads the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus in The Pulitzer Project, a Cedille Records collection devoted to three works honored during the earliest years of the Pulitzer Prize in Music. The program brings together William Schuman’s A Free Song, winner of the inaugural music prize in 1943; Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring, honored in 1945, and Leo Sowerby’s The Canticle of the Sun, the 1946 winner.

Schuman’s A Free Song, featuring baritone Ryan J. Cox, sets passages from Walt Whitman’s Drum-Taps in a work shaped by the United States’ experience during World War II. Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring draws on music composed for Martha Graham’s ballet and includes the familiar Shaker melody “Simple Gifts.” Sowerby’s expansive The Canticle of the Sun sets the words of St. Francis of Assisi for chorus and orchestra, reflecting the rich choral writing of one of Chicago’s most important composers.

Recorded in concert in Chicago in June 2010, the album includes the world-premiere recordings of both A Free Song and The Canticle of the Sun. Released by Cedille Records in 2011, The Pulitzer Project connects three landmark works of American music with the Grant Park ensembles and Chicago’s own musical history.
