Marin Alsop leads the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in three orchestral works by Kurt Weill that trace the composer’s development from his early European years to his later career in the United States. The program includes Symphony No. 1 (Berliner Symphony), Symphony No. 2 (Symphonic Fantasy) and Lady in the Dark, arranged by Robert Russell Bennett.
Weill’s First Symphony is an ambitious student work composed before the theatrical collaborations that would make him famous. The Second Symphony, completed in 1933 after Weill fled Nazi Germany, is darker and more concentrated, combining sharply etched rhythms with an atmosphere of tension and uncertainty. The closing Lady in the Dark Symphonic Nocturne turns to the composer’s American stage career, drawing orchestral selections from his 1941 Broadway musical with Ira Gershwin.
Released by Naxos in 2005, the album showcases the remarkable breadth of Weill’s orchestral language, from early symphonic experimentation to the distinctive dramatic style that bridged the concert hall, theater and Broadway.
