Pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Leonidas Kavakos and cellist Yo-Yo Ma launch the Beethoven for Three series with intimate chamber arrangements of two of Beethoven’s best-known symphonies: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36, and Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67. Recast for piano trio, the works retain the urgency and dramatic impact of Beethoven’s orchestral writing through the concentrated interplay of three instrumental voices.
The arrangement of the Second Symphony is attributed to Beethoven’s friend and student Ferdinand Ries and was prepared under the composer’s supervision, reflecting the early 19th-century tradition of adapting orchestral music for smaller ensembles. The Fifth Symphony appears in a new arrangement by English composer Colin Matthews, who preserves the work’s rhythmic drive and architectural sweep within the more transparent textures of piano, violin and cello.
Released by Sony Classical, Beethoven for Three: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 5 opens Ax, Kavakos and Ma’s ongoing exploration of the connections between Beethoven’s symphonic and chamber music, offering a fresh perspective on two cornerstone works of the orchestral repertoire.
