Pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Leonidas Kavakos and cellist Yo-Yo Ma continue their Beethoven for Three series with a pairing of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major, Op. 60, and the Piano Trio No. 7 in B-flat Major, Op. 97 (Archduke). The recording explores the connection between Beethoven’s orchestral and chamber music, reimagining the Fourth Symphony for piano trio alongside one of his most celebrated works written for that ensemble.
Arranged by pianist and composer Shai Wosner, the Fourth Symphony preserves the energy, wit and contrast of Beethoven’s orchestral score while revealing its musical ideas through the more intimate sound of piano, violin and cello. The expansive Archduke Trio provides a natural counterpart, combining lyrical warmth, rhythmic vitality and the conversational interplay at the heart of Beethoven’s chamber music.
Released by Sony Classical in 2024, this third volume of Beethoven for Three continues Ax, Kavakos and Ma’s exploration of Beethoven from a fresh perspective, blurring the traditional boundaries between symphonic and chamber repertoire.
