This strikes me as being an exceptionally fine performance, drawing one deeper into the music at each new hearing. Perlman and Giulini have given us an account of the Concerto which will, I am sure, gratify and move many Brahmsians.
Itzhak Perlman joins conductor Carlo Maria Giulini and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77, one of the defining works of the Romantic violin repertoire. Written for Brahms’ close friend and celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim, the concerto balances sweeping drama, lyrical warmth and formidable virtuosity.
Recorded at Medinah Temple in Chicago in November and December 1976, Perlman’s performance with Giulini and the CSO was immediately recognized as a landmark interpretation. The recording, praised for Perlman’s expressive range and Giulini’s richly detailed partnership with the Orchestra, won the 1978 Grammy Award for Best Classical Album.
Originally released in 1977, this classic recording remains one of Perlman’s most celebrated accounts of the Brahms concerto and an enduring document of his collaboration with Giulini and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
