Available exclusively at the Symphony Store, Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the Twentieth Century: Collector’s Choice is a 10-CD journey through more than six decades of the Orchestra’s recorded history. Released by the CSO in 2000, the collection brings together live and archival performances recorded from 1933-96, featuring music directors Frederick Stock, Désiré Defauw, Artur Rodziński, Fritz Reiner, Jean Martinon, Sir Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim alongside celebrated guest conductors including Bruno Walter, Leopold Stokowski, Charles Munch, Pierre Monteux, Carlo Maria Giulini and Kirill Kondrashin.

The repertoire reaches from Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and Wagner to Mahler, Prokofiev, Bartók, Copland and Elliott Carter, capturing the extraordinary breadth of the CSO’s 20th-century history. Highlights include Reiner conducting Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Martinon leading Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with mezzo-soprano Regina Resnik, Solti in Bartók’s Two Portraits and Carter’s Variations for Orchestra and Giulini conducting selections from Mozart’s Divertimento No. 11 with legendary CSO principal oboe Ray Still.

The collection also preserves remarkable documents from beyond the Orchestra’s commercial discography. Frederick Stock leads a Festival Chorus of 2,500 in Wagner at Chicago’s 1933 A Century of Progress Exposition; Marian Anderson narrates Copland’s Preamble for a Solemn Occasion under Seiji Ozawa at Ravinia, and Daniel Barenboim conducts Beethoven’s Christ on the Mount of Olives with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and soloists Laura Aikin, Ben Heppner and René Pape.

Accompanied by a booklet of program notes, Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the Twentieth Century: Collector’s Choice offers a sweeping portrait of the conductors, soloists, composers and performances that shaped the Chicago Symphony Orchestra across the 20th century.
