A positive clinic in how this music should sound: bold solo winds and brass, percussion sharp as tacks, all painted in bright, primary colors.
In 1911, Pierre Monteux conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka with the Ballets Russes. Over 40 years later, he revisits this masterpiece with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, who he led as Music Director from 1919 to 1924. Alongside this, hear César Franck’s Symphony in D Minor — a frequently-performed work of the mid-1900s, which has become a rarity in the twenty-first century.
