Robert Spano conducts Lieberson & Theofanidis features Robert Spano leading the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Peter Lieberson’s Neruda Songs and Christopher Theofanidis’s Symphony No. 1. Released on ASO Media, the album features mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor in Lieberson’s luminous Pablo Neruda settings and highlights Spano’s long advocacy for contemporary American composers.
Theofanidis’s Symphony No. 1 was commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and premiered by Spano at Atlanta Symphony Hall in April 2009. Paired with the expressive warmth of Neruda Songs, this release offers a compelling portrait of the Atlanta Symphony’s commitment to new American orchestral music, shaped by lyric intensity, vibrant orchestral color and deeply personal expression.
