Klaus Mäkelä and the Oslo Philharmonic explore three of Dmitri Shostakovich’s most powerful symphonies on this Decca Classics recording: Symphony No. 4 in C Minor, Op. 43, Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47 and Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 54. Composed during the turbulent 1930s, the works reflect a period of extraordinary artistic pressure and personal danger in Shostakovich’s life.

The vast Fourth Symphony pushes structure, harmony and orchestral color to extremes, while the Fifth combines tightly controlled form with layers of ambiguity, drama and emotional tension. The Sixth opens with an extended, deeply introspective Largo before turning to two shorter movements of grotesque energy, parody and restless momentum.

Shostakovich’s music has been central to Mäkelä’s relationship with the Oslo Philharmonic since their earliest performances together, including the Fifth Symphony in 2019. This recording captures their continuing exploration of the composer’s distinctive musical world, from the brutal modernism of the Fourth to the concentrated intensity of the Fifth and the striking contrasts of the Sixth.
