Klaus Mäkelä leads the Oslo Philharmonic in the complete symphonies of Jean Sibelius on his debut recording for Decca Classics. The collection brings together all seven completed symphonies, from Symphony No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 39, through Symphony No. 7 in C Major, Op. 105, alongside the late tone poem Tapiola, Op. 112 and three surviving fragments associated with Sibelius’ unfinished Eighth Symphony.

Sibelius’ music has deep roots in the history of the Oslo Philharmonic, which has performed the composer’s works for more than a century. Sibelius himself conducted the orchestra in three concerts devoted to his music in 1921, establishing a connection that Mäkelä draws on in this complete cycle.

The recording project grew from an intensive exploration of Sibelius during Mäkelä’s inaugural season as Chief Conductor. When pandemic disruptions altered the orchestra’s plans, Mäkelä and the Oslo Philharmonic devoted much of spring 2021 to immersing themselves in the symphonies before recording them. Released in 2022, the set captures a young Finnish conductor and a Scandinavian orchestra with a long Sibelius tradition approaching the composer’s complete symphonic output as a unified musical journey.
