Bedřich Smetana’s Má vlast is a sweeping cycle of six symphonic poems inspired by the landscapes, history and legends of Bohemia. Completed in 1879, the work became a defining expression of Czech musical nationalism, with movements including Vyšehrad, Vltava, Šárka, From Bohemian Fields and Groves, Tábor and Blaník.
Czech conductor Rafael Kubelík was one of the work’s great champions, returning to Má vlast throughout his career with orchestras including the Czech Philharmonic and Boston Symphony Orchestra. This historic 1952 recording captures Kubelík leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall during his tenure as the ensemble’s music director.
Recorded December 4-6, 1952, using Mercury’s pioneering single-microphone technique, the performance preserves the full sweep and color of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in one of Kubelík’s signature works. This Pristine Classical edition has been XR remastered by Andrew Rose from the surviving source material.
