Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra bring exceptional clarity, color and dramatic intensity to two of Richard Strauss’ great tone poems: Don Quixote, Op. 35, and Don Juan, Op. 20. Reiner had a close personal and professional connection to Strauss’ music, and his recordings with the CSO remain among the defining documents of the Orchestra’s celebrated Straussian tradition.
Recorded at Orchestra Hall in 1959, Don Quixote features cellist Antonio Janigro as the wandering knight, CSO principal viola Milton Preves as his companion Sancho Panza and concertmaster John Weicher. Strauss’ series of variations transforms episodes from Cervantes’ novel into vivid orchestral storytelling, giving the solo cello and viola central roles within a richly detailed orchestral canvas.
The collection also includes Reiner and the CSO’s 1954 recording of Don Juan, a brilliant orchestral showpiece propelled by surging themes, lyrical interludes and virtuosic writing throughout the ensemble. Together, these performances capture the precision, transparency and expressive power that made Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra legendary interpreters of Richard Strauss.
