The headline feature of this terrific Petrushka is characterization. It’s a performance full of animation and incident from the Orchestre de Paris, and their impressive line-up of wind soloists possesses a dancer’s sensibility.

Klaus Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris continue their exploration of music associated with the Ballets Russes on this Decca Classics recording, pairing Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka with two works by Claude Debussy: Jeux and Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun. The album follows Mäkelä’s acclaimed recording of Stravinsky’s The Firebird and The Rite of Spring with the same orchestra.

Stravinsky’s vividly theatrical Petrushka combines brilliant orchestral color, rhythmic energy and sharply drawn character in its depiction of the ill-fated puppet brought to life at a bustling Shrovetide fair. Debussy’s Jeux, originally written for the Ballets Russes, offers a more elusive world of shifting motion and color, while Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun unfolds in a sensuous, dreamlike haze.

Petrushka was recorded live at the Philharmonie de Paris in September 2023, with Jeux and Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun recorded there in December 2023. Released in 2024, the album captures Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris in repertoire central to their ongoing exploration of early 20th-century French and Russian orchestral music.
