Klaus Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris explore two of Igor Stravinsky’s most influential ballet scores on this Decca Classics recording: The Rite of Spring and the complete 1910-11 version of The Firebird. The album marked Mäkelä’s first recording with the Orchestre de Paris, where he began his tenure as Music Director in 2021.
Both works emerged from Stravinsky’s collaboration with the Ballets Russes and helped redefine orchestral music in the early 20th century. The Firebird combines shimmering orchestral color, Russian folklore and dramatic storytelling. The Rite of Spring pushes rhythm, harmony and orchestral sonority to startling extremes.
Recorded live during a major Stravinsky project at the Philharmonie de Paris, these performances capture the intensity, precision and vivid orchestral color that have characterized Mäkelä’s partnership with the Orchestre de Paris. Released in 2023, the album also launched a continuing series devoted to music associated with the Ballets Russes.
