A powerful Manfred is included — one of the finest available, surely — but the others are equally impressive ... The first three symphonies really take wing, especially the first movement of the First, Winter Daydreams, the Little Russian's cantering Scherzo and the Polish Symphony's heart-warming Andante elegiaco.

Riccardo Muti leads the Philharmonia Orchestra in a sweeping survey of Tchaikovsky’s symphonic music, bringing together all six numbered symphonies alongside the Manfred Symphony, Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, Op. 23, featuring pianist Andrei Gavrilov.

The collection traces Tchaikovsky’s development from the youthful lyricism of Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams), through the increasingly personal drama of the middle symphonies to the emotional intensity of Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74 (Pathétique). The expansive Manfred Symphony and Romeo and Juliet add two of the composer’s most vivid orchestral narratives, and Gavrilov joins Muti and the Philharmonia for the brilliant and enduringly popular First Piano Concerto.

Originally recorded during Muti’s years with the Philharmonia Orchestra, these performances have long been admired for their combination of dramatic energy, expressive warmth and orchestral detail. This Warner Classics edition presents the cycle in newly remastered high-definition sound, offering a substantial portrait of Tchaikovsky through some of his greatest symphonic and concert works.
