Crossing Borders: A Musical Journey brings together nine acclaimed Yo-Yo Ma albums that reflect the cellist’s lifelong curiosity about music beyond the traditional classical repertoire. Spanning jazz, tango, American roots music, Brazilian traditions, Japanese melodies and the cross-cultural work of the Silk Road Ensemble, the collection showcases Ma as both virtuoso cellist and musical explorer.
Among the highlights are Appalachia Waltz and Appalachian Journey with fiddler Mark O’Connor and bassist Edgar Meyer, Soul of the Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla and the Grammy-winning Obrigado Brazil. The set also includes Silk Road Journeys: When Strangers Meet, created with Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and Japanese Melodies, devoted to traditional Japanese repertoire.
Ma’s collaborations extend further into jazz and popular music on Anything Goes, featuring violinist Stéphane Grappelli in music by Cole Porter, and Claude Bolling’s Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio with Bolling at the piano. Hush, Ma’s celebrated collaboration with vocalist Bobby McFerrin, completes a collection that reveals the extraordinary range of musical traditions, artists and styles that have shaped his recording career.
