Yusef Lateef’s Alight Upon the Lake: Live at the Jazz Showcase captures the legendary multi-instrumentalist in previously unreleased performances recorded at Chicago’s famed Jazz Showcase in June 1975. Released by Resonance Records, the 3-CD set features Lateef alongside pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Bob Cunningham and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath in an expansive live program blending spiritual jazz, post-bop and global influences.
Drawn from the archival recordings of Jazz Showcase founder Joe Segal, these newly restored performances document Lateef’s deeply exploratory musical voice at the height of his creative powers. From meditative improvisations to rhythmically charged ensemble passages, the collection highlights the expressive range, tonal imagination and cross-cultural vocabulary that made Lateef one of the most distinctive figures in modern jazz.
